Meeting Notes
February 24, 2011

Quorum present.

Call to order at 6:00 pm. Prayer for Scecina by all. Chair welcomes new Board member Rick Pfleger.

Staff Presentation by Director of Guidance

  • Background: New to Scecina this year, Woodward is a graduate of St. Mary College and Butler University and most recently worked at Roncalli High School.
  • Initial impressions and objectives: Staff is highly qualified, eager, and helpful. Students care, and parents are proud of the school, all of which foster a strong sense of community. Working to develop a comprehensive guidance program to address social and academic needs, including enhanced website content, career planning, college visits, and peer mentoring.

President’s Report

  • Community Needs Assessment complete and beginning transition to next phase.
  • Development: Thanks Board for 100 percent participation in Giving Back, Looking Forward initiative. Stresses need for more dialogue with supporters in addition to asking for financial support. Great energy at event in February with 20 Chicago alumni with further conversations to occur this summer.
  • Eastside Catholic School Partnership (ECSP): ECSP board has prioritized areas of synergy and challenge among schools and will develop mission statement accordingly. ECSP board has developed consensus to identify Scecina as “The parish high school of (fill in the blank) Parish.”
  • Technology Committee: Jeff McMahon, Class of 1980, and IPS IT Director to serve as chair. Chair and school administrators developed committee recruitment matrix of desired characteristics. Next step is to identify and enlist candidates according to desired attributes. Success opportunities prior to committee enlistment include best-practice school visits, SMHS infrastructure walk-through, and review of 2011-12 technology budget with chair.
  • “Teacher Development Program” (Archdiocesan Compensation Taskforce): Scecina has been accepted by the Archdiocese to be pilot school effective spring
  • 2011. 2011-2012 Planning and Budgeting Opportunities include 1) reinvigorating the Godparent Program begun in early 90s by John Hofer, and 2) exploring and evaluating opportunities to integrate planned giving messages into existing communications in a cost effective manner, among others.
  • Search for Vice President for Advancement continues.

Community Needs Assessment (CNA) Report distributed by Johnson, Grossnickle and Associates, JGA.

  • Preliminary presentation and discussion prior to Board Retreat.
  • Process included 17 external interviews (14 by JGA, 3 by Therber); 1 group discussion with Archdiocese of Indianapolis officials conducted by JGA and 7 local focus group meetings conducted by Therber. Findings in distributed report include Overall Perceptions, Overarching Concerns, Strategic Opportunities, and Recommendations.

Board Retreat

  • JGA will facilitate the Board retreat on visioning and specifics of CNA report
  • Date and Place: April 9, tentatively at Scecina
