5 unique paths to college for Scecina students

My name is Josh Orndorff, and I am the college and career counselor at Scecina Memorial High School.

As a parent, you dream of your child succeeding in life and becoming the very best person he or she can become. Striving for and graduating from college can help make your dream a reality.

While high school graduation may seem like a long way off, many parents say that the four years of high school fly by and suddenly their child is applying to colleges. Because the future arrives quickly, I want you to be aware of five unique pathways to college that are available to Scecina students.

The Indiana Commission for Higher Education tells young people that “College is more than just a degree.” College lays the foundation for a successful career. A college degree helps young people attain good jobs and earn a better salary. Here are the statistics from the Commission’s website:

  • Looking ahead, 60 percent of jobs will require education beyond high school.
  • College graduates on average earn $22,000 more a year than workers with only a high school diploma. (Over 30 years, the difference in earnings can be well over a half million dollars.)
  • College graduates have 50 percent higher job security compared to high school graduates.

Those are great statistics, but college is very expensive. How will you be able to afford it?

I am very happy to inform you that, thanks to the generosity of alumni and friends of Scecina, there is scholarship money that has been dedicated for Scecina students who meet eligibility requirements at these four institutions of higher education:

  • Marian University
  • Purdue University
  • Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College
  • University of Dayton

The fifth college opportunity is the State of Indiana’s 21st Century Scholars Program, which helps children from low-income families have zero or significantly reduced tuition costs to attend a college or university in Indiana. We at Scecina provide the resources and expertise to help our 21st Century Scholars attend college as affordably as possible. It’s part of our commitment to you.

If you choose Scecina for your child’s high school education, we will work with your child and you to prepare for college. If you have any questions about these unique college opportunities, I would be happy to answer them. You can contact me at jorndorff@scecina.org or at 317-356-6377 ext. 1113.

I filled out the application for 21st Century Scholars and I was denied. I supposedly make $200 over the income.
