A net gain for Crusaders volleyball captains

Mary O’Connor and Grace Wright, senior co-captains of the Crusaders volleyball team, played in the Don Shondell All-Star Volleyball Tournament at Munciana Volleyball Club in Yorktown, Indiana, last month.

 The other players on the victorious West team were from Bishop Chatard, Center Grove, Trinity Lutheran, and Southport and were coached by Chelsea Stroub of Trinity Lutheran. They defeated the East team in three sets, 25-16, 25-16, and 25-21. 

The team was made up of six defensive specialists and two hitters, but were very dominant in ball control and serving. 

Mary received Academic All-State, Academic All-Conference, and All Conference honors this year. She played volleyball all four years and was selected as the Most Outstanding Defensive Player this season. 

Grace received Academic All-State, Academic All-Conference, All Conference, and Honorable Mention All-City honors this year. She played all four years and was selected at the Most Outstanding Offensive Player for the second year in a row. 

The Scecina Volleyball team, coached by Kevin Griffin ’76, Jerry Saffold, Sandy Clegg, Erika Whitehead ’01 and Pam Brake, finished the season third in Indiana Crossroads Conference with a record of 5-2 and lost to eventual state runner-up Covenant Christian in the Sectional championship.
