Peter,Thanks for raising these important points, and we look forward to discussing them in Budapest. In the meantime, please allow me to share some of our thinking in these areas. We believe that the proposed initiatives will bring important benefits to alumni who are unable to travel. For those that are comfortable online, they will have efficient access through our global website and global network to a world of online services, information and connections. Moreover, the central implementation of of these initiatives will eventually relieve the national and local chapters of certain administrative tasks (e.g., membership administration), freeing up time and resources to put on better local events. We also believe that our more attractive single membership and everything that goes with it will increase member participation, including at local events. With respect to the digital divide, it is true that some very resourceful alumni do not participate in social media or even email in some cases. However, if they use the internet, they will have access to a wealth of relevant information on our global website (and national and local pages), and our directory will provide contact information that could include telephone numbers (subject to privacy restrictions). If they are unable or unwilling to use the internet, they will also have the opportunity to engage with well-informed members at live events, and we can also envisage a service for paid members that would provide access to a newsletter by regular mail. It may be impossible to create a solution that is perfectly adapted to each alum s travel and communication preferences, but there is much we can do if we take these preferences into account at the outset and if everyone is willing to make some small compromises. Thank you for your continued participation in this project. I look forward to continuing our dialogue in Budapest!Very best,David
