Congratulations to Crusaders fall sports teams, athletes

Scecina Cross Country coach Ryan Keen with Semi-State qualifiers Holden Martin, Jacqueline Kennedy and Henry Egan.

Dear Scecina community,

The year continues to move by quickly. Before we take a look at some upcoming events, I want to congratulate our sports teams for an excellent fall season. Three of our teams – boys soccer, boys cross country and football – won the championships in the Indiana Crossroads Conference. In addition, three of our boys and girls cross country runners advanced to the Semi-State level of the state tournament, as did the boys soccer team.

Congratulations also to our girls volleyball team for advancing to the Sectional final and to our girls golf, girls soccer, and boys tennis teams for positive showings and performance this fall. We will honor all of them at the annual Fall Sports Program next Wednesday, Nov. 2, at 7 p.m. in the gymnasium.

Next week is the first senior retreat of the year. If you have older children or relatives who have made this retreat, you know how meaningful it is to them. The students spend three nights away from school and family — sharing, praying and worshipping together. It is a profound experience. Many students consider it the highlight of their four years at Scecina. Please pray for our seniors who are on retreat next week and also for our staff and young alumni who will lead them.

Looking further ahead, I invite you to Father Tom Day Mass on Nov. 9. We set aside a day each year to remember our namesake, Father Thomas Scecina. We also recognize a member of our community for his or her servant leadership through the years, as well as our alumni who have served their country as Father Tom did. The Father Tom Award this year will be presented to Ryan Keen. He’s been our boys and girls track and cross country coach for many years and does an excellent job of teaching, motivating, and building esteem among the student athletes.  We will gather at 9:30 a.m., and Mass will begin at 9:45.

In two weeks we’ll hold our biggest benefit event for tuition assistance, student life and athletics. Club 53: Live and Local features something for everyone: food from local restaurants, locally made beverages, silent and live auctions, a raffle, and live entertainment. Everyone is welcome to join in this Scecina community event.

Finally, thank you to Monsignor Paul Koetter for his thorough and thoughtful explanation of the Catholic Mass at two Explanatory Masses this fall — one at Scecina and the second at Holy Spirit Parish this past week. Several people who attended have told me how meaningful they found the explanations to be.

Come out to the University of Indianapolis tonight at 7:00 p.m. as our Crusader football team hosts the Cardinal Ritter Raiders in Round 2 of IHSAA Sectional play. Our team has had a fantastic season and deserves our support!

Have a great weekend,

Joe Therber
