Crusader Wrestlers Make History

On Saturday, December 20, 2014, your Crusader Wrestlers made school history when every team member placed in the top five for their weight class at the City Championship Tournament held at Shortridge High School.

The squad was led by Senior Mitchell Donlan, who defeated tough opponents from Arsenal Tech and Cathedral to place first in the 138lbs weight class, becoming Scecina’s first City Champion wrestler since 2005.

Seniors Ben Hilcz (126lbs) and Kevin Walters (132lbs), along with sophomore Ray Reisinger (113lbs) each placed third, while senior Chris Wilson (182lbs) and freshman Sam Defreese (145lbs) rounded out the top five in their respective divisions.

This mid-season success is a well-deserved bright spot for a team that has faced multiple injuries. Despite the setbacks, the wrestlers have persevered and are hoping to take the momentum of this past weekend’s accomplishments into the second half of their season. With sectionals a month away, the Crusaders are peaking at just the right time.

Congratulations grapplers!!! I am so glad to see that the legend of Scecina's wrestler stamina continues. I was also on the team from 1967-1970. I won the city championship in 1967 for my weight class of 103 lbs. I was so proud of that and always will be. Wrestling taught me discipline and how to sacrifice for something I believed in. When you are so tired of losing that last pound or two to make weight, remember that so many have done it before you, and have never forgot it, as you also will not. Best of luck in the rest of the season, and remember that we are all in it together... I am rooting. Gene Humbles, Class of 1970
