The Crusaders won another Regional softball championship on Tuesday night with a 14-1 win over the South Vermillion Wildcats.
On Saturday, Scecina (23-4) will face the South Spencer Rebels (18-7) in the Class 2A Semi-State semifinals. The Crusaders opened up Sectional play on May 23 when they matched up with ICC foe Cardinal Ritter.
The score was tied in the top of the fourth inning when Trinity Eckerty came up to bat and homered. Cassie Smith pitched seven scoreless innings and gave up just six hits. The Crusaders created some more breathing room when she hit one over the fence as well. The Crusaders tallied a dozen hits with Lizzie Smith, Kristina Streeval and Emma Deery each collecting multiple hits. Scecina won 5-0 to advance to the Sectional Finals against Covenant Christian.
The Crusaders took control of the game early, scoring seven runs in the first inning. Cali Burgess, Kaylyn Linder and Trinity Eckerty loaded the bases for Sara Beers, who delivered a bases-clearing double. Lizzie Smith then did the same thing and allowed the Crusaders to build a seven run lead in the top half of the innings.
The Warriors then came up to bat in the bottom of the first, and scored three runs. But that was all they would get. Scecina’s Cassie Smith allowed six hits, struck out three batters and relied on her defense to make outs. The final score: Scecina 15, Covenant 3, as the Crusaders captured their 14th consecutive Sectional title.
The Crusaders play the Rebels at 11 a.m. Saturday at Cedar Crest Intermediate School, 4770 South State Road 162, Huntingburg. The winner will advance to the Semi-State Final at 7 p.m. against the winner of the Henryville-Northeastern game.
