Crusaders softball team wins ICC championship
The Scecina Crusaders softball team won the Indiana Crossroads Conference title this month. They were undefeated in conference games in 2016.
By Cory Gray, Softball Coach
Every year, the Crusaders softball players have certain goals they aspire to achieve, one of them being a conference championship.
With a 5-0 win over Beech Grove on May 11, Scecina met one of those goals: winning the Indiana Crossroads Conference title. With wins against Cardinal Ritter, Monrovia, Beech Grove, Speedway, Lutheran and Triton Central, the team won the conference title outright. Throughout ICC play, the Crusaders racked up over 50 runs while giving up only two runs.
Leading the way was junior Cassie Smith, who started all conference games and recorded a win in each. The defense was stellar behind her, but early offense provided her confidence and opportunities to shut down the opponents.
The Crusaders followed up their conference championship with a trip to 2A No. 2 Elwood for a double header. The 2A No. 6 Crusaders proceeded to put up 20 hits and get the victory, 14-4. Cassie Smith threw another gem and the defense behind her was sufficient. The Crusader offense was outstanding as every starter had at least one hit; four girls each produced three hits, including Kristina Streeval’s three-run homer. The second game was not played because of rain.
The Crusaders are looking forward to the IHSAA State Tournament. The Sectionals begin the week of May 23.
