Expect to Win

The 2014 Crusader Baseball team entered every game inspired by their motto: “expect to win.” The result? The senior-laden team chalked up 17 wins to only 8 losses, including an exciting extra-inning victory over Cathedral High School. Several players were honored for their performance, and the Crusader Athletic Department recently learned that Head Coach Dave Gandolph ’68 received an impressive honor as well.

Following his first season at the helm of the Crusader Baseball program, Coach Gandolph was recently selected as a Division III Regional Coach of the Year by the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA). There are over 24,000 schools in Division III, and Gandolph is one of only eight coaches from the division to receive the award this year. He will represent Region 4 (IL, IN, KY, MI, OH, TN) at the Annual ABCA Convention in Orlando, Florida on January 2-5, 2015.

Coach Gandolph was both surprised and grateful upon receiving the award. “It is a great honor to receive this award. Many thanks to the ABCA,a first rate organization that has a national membership with thousands of coaches. It is much appreciated,” said Gandolph.

The selection was no surprise to Scecina Athletic Director, Jason Kehrer ’88. “From day one, Coach Gandolph set a tone for the program. The team motto was ‘expect to win.’ Getting young student-athletes to say that is one thing, getting them to believe it is another. Coach inspired these young men to confidently compete to the best of their ability, and that is the mark of a great coach. The award is well-deserved.” said Kehrer.

Next season will bring new players, new challenges, and perhaps a new motto for the Crusader Baseball program. However, at least one thing will not change: Coach Gandolph and his players will enter each game expecting to win.
