Irish-American organization honors 2 from Scecina

Sister Sheila Hackett (right) and senior Will Ferree are making Scecina proud this St. Patrick’s Day. Both were recognized by the Ancient Order of Hibernians, Kevin Barry Division #3, during the AOH’s 147th annual St. Patrick’s Day celebration on March 12.

Sister Sheila, Scecina’s librarian, was awarded with the 2017 Hibernian Presidents Award.

“I was thrilled to be honored with their highest award and be one of the honorees in their nearly 150-year history,” Sister Sheila said.

Sister Sheila was born and raised in South Tipperary, Ireland. Her father, Patrick, and his two brothers fought for Irish independence. Her eldest brother took part in the 1981 hunger strike in Ireland.

 “The first book I remember reading is ‘My Fight for Irish Freedom,’ by Dan Breen,” she said.

Sister’s decision to become a Dominican nun led her to Texas. 

In Indianapolis, Sister is party of the Irish community. She is a member of the Ladies Ancient Order of Hiberbians, in which she serves as chaplain. She is celebrating her 62nd year as a sister and her 51st year in Catholic education.

Sister Sheila says she usually celebrates St. Patrick’s Day by watching the parade Downtown, going to the home of one of her Irish friends, and staying away from the crowds.

Ferree (right) was one of four Hibernian scholarship winners. He was awarded the Karen (Fagan) McLeish AOH Award.

Ferree’s great-great grandparents came to Indianapolis around the turn of the century from Glenamaddy, County Galway. Will volunteers at Irish Fest and pariticpates in events such as the AOH’s St. Patrick’s Day Celebration.

 He was a co-captain of the the football team, receiving All-Conference, Academic All-Conference, Academic All-State, Region 7 All-Star honors. Will, who also plays baseball, has a 4.18 GPA at Scecina and received the William Bevan Student Athlete Award presented to the male athlete with the highest GPA. He’s also been awarded the Student Athlete and the President’s Academic Excellence awards each year of high school.

 His school activities include National Honor Society, Academic Super Bowl, Student Ambassadors, Key Club, Student Council and Crusaders for Life club.
