Lady Crusader Basketball | Gavaghan ’14 Tops 1,000
The 2013-2014 season was a year of improvement for the Lady Crusaders. The team posted 10 wins—two more than the previous year—and fired up the Scecina faithful with determined effort and enthusiasm. In addition to the team success, the season will be remembered for the individual accomplishments of the program’s four-year starter, Shannon Gavaghan ’14.
In a game against Cardinal Ritter on February 1st, Shannon joined former teammate Colleen Asher ‘12 as one of only two Lady Crusader basketball players to score more 1,000 points in a season. At the game, fans from both sides of the court stood in applause as Shannon’s remarkable feat was announced. She was presented with a commemorative ball to mark the occasion.
For Shannon, the moment was thrilling, but not something she envisioned as a freshman. “I honestly never thought of scoring 1,000 points early on—and even if I would have, it would have seemed nearly impossible.”
Shannon was able to turn the seemingly “impossible” into “possible” through consistent effort and a passion for the game of basketball—traits she learned by growing up in a big basketball family.
“A lot of my relatives played basketball and played at Scecina too, so it was natural for me to do the same. Growing up, basketball was always a big part of my life. My dad hosts an annual 3-on-3 tournament every July that benefits local causes—this year will be the 38th annual— and so basketball has become more than just a game for me too.”
