Scecina Principal John Hegarty
Dear Scecina community,
Today I am announcing some exciting changes that will move Scecina Memorial High School forward and build upon our school’s history of success.
I believe God is continually showing us a path forward. Listening, discerning, and then acting, we can realize the vision that God has for us.
Cardinal Tobin reflected on the theme of vision in his homily recently at the Senior Mass for the Class of 2017. He encouraged the seniors to remember that God is not in the rearview mirror; instead, He is like a car’s headlights, always showing us the way home, illuminating our path.
I believe that God is beckoning Scecina to grow again, to be more and do more. As a result, I have been talking with the archdiocesan Office of Catholic Schools, the Scecina Board of Directors and many staff members about Scecina’s growth model for the future. We all agree that Scecina is being called to:
- Expand our students’ educational opportunities and life skills;
- Further enhance our school’s impact and position in the community;
- Create new sources of revenue; and
- Build our enrollment even more.
Responding to new opportunities while holding close our mission and traditions, we will continue to develop servant leaders who make a difference in the world. Looking ahead to 2017, we hope to expand some programs and explore some new ones. For a few examples, we plan to:
- Expand our International Student Program;
- Explore partnership opportunities to provide technical training for our students who plan to enter the workforce straight from high school; and
- Expand our CREST program (Crusaders Reaching Educational Success Together) to enhance the academic and life skills for students with high-functioning autism.
To make this happen, we are creating a new leadership position, which we are now calling Vice President of Community Initiatives. A primary responsibility under this new position will be collaboration with administrative, staff and community leaders to develop program implementation plans and resource goals. Key qualities necessary for the position include: experience in education, understanding of issues relating to international students and fondness for students with special learning needs.
We project this new initiative will help more of our students succeed, expand our impact, and generate net revenue for new or existing programs, capital improvements, endowment funds and/or savings for future opportunities.
Because of his gifts and affinity for this new initiative, I invited our principal, Mr. John Hegarty, to consider taking on this new role. John’s gifts fit this position, plus he already has demonstrated his commitment to Scecina and his ability to be a positive ambassador for our school. He recently traveled to China as a Scecina representative and expanded his knowledge about international student programs.
I am delighted to say that John has accepted my invitation to become Vice President of Community Initiatives. I thank him for sharing his gifts and talents in the past, and I look forward to continuing to work with him in the future.
With John accepting the new position, we will begin recruiting a new principal. The recruitment process will begin in January. We plan to create a Search Committee that will, among other duties, seek input from students, staff, parents and the Scecina Community. Please stay tuned for more information regarding the principal search.
Thank you for keeping Scecina in your thoughts and prayers. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions.
I wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year as we await, reflect on and experience the meaning of God coming into our lives through the person of Jesus.
