Office 365 for Education is providing faculty, staff, and eventually students at SMHS with cloud-based versions of MS Office products, email, file storage, and web conferencing.
SMHS President Joe Therber said “Technology is part of our Strategic Growth Plan. It is a necessary part of our overall efforts to provide our students with an outstanding education that prepares them to succeed in the 21st Century.”
SMHS recently installed 33,000 feet of CAT6a Ethernet cable to connect devices to one another and the Internet. The school also has improved the speed and coverage of its wireless network. This is providing the foundation for many more technology additions planned in the near future.
One example is an enhanced classroom learning environment, aided by technology. A first step has started with the installation of 60” LCD panels in ten classrooms. Remaining classrooms will be equipped over time. The placement of the panel in each classroom is of important note – using the traditional front and now the sides of each classroom for presentation and learning space, students and teachers will have an active 180 degree field of education. Other enhancements are planned as well to add additional audio, video, web conferencing capabilities to every classroom.
Therber added, “What we have done in the last 30 days is absolutely remarkable. The improvements are analogous to transforming a country road into a modern freeway.”
David Dellacca, Vice President of Technology, who led the effort said “We made important infrastructure improvements that will greatly improve data communication. Now, with Office 365 for Education we have added outstanding productivity and collaboration tools that everyone at SMHS can use.”
The decision to select a Microsoft solution (Windows 8.1 and Office365) for the primary platform of computers and tablets was not made lightly. Through technology committee, staff discussions and visits to other schools, Scecina has found the best fit for its students. Ultimately, this mix of operating system and business productivity tools will best prepare Scecina graduates to be excellent information and knowledge workers long after they leave the halls of Scecina.
Here are some of the features and benefits of Office 365 Education:
Free versions of Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and OneNote allow students to work across multiple devices, right from a browser. Multiple users can work on the same document together. Office 365 can be accessed by Windows and Macintosh devices from anywhere on the planet with internet access.
More robust email
SMHS now has the kind of email system that businesses are accustomed to using, shared calendars, and 50 GB of storage space per user.
SMHS can now conduct meetings over the web with HD video conferencing, screen sharing and instant messaging.
Simple file sharing
OneDrive cloud storage gives each user 1 TB of personal storage that each person can access from anywhere. It is possible to sync these files with their computer, tablet or smartphone. Faculty and staff can easily share files internally and externally and control who see and edits them.
Intranet sites for faculty and staff teams:
SharePoint intranet sites provide workspaces with customizable security settings for faculty and staff teams. Commonly used documents can be shared across campus.
Spam and malware protection
