Ott Hurrle knows the real story of Scecina's mulch sale.
So why the heck does Scecina sell mulch as a fundraiser for our athletics department?
We went to Ott Hurrle '70, Scecina football and boys golf coach and 2014 Power of Influence winner, for the real behind-the-scenes story of the mulch fundraiser. Ott was Scecina's athletic director at the time.
As is his manner, Ott would not take any credit for starting the mulch sale and helping raise thousands of dollars for Crusader athletics.
"It really started with Mike Lovell (husband of Cathy (Commons) Lovell '72)," said Ott. "He knew of a high school baseball team in Louisville that did this, and he wanted to start it here for the Booster Club as a way of helping athletics. So he did all the research about where to get the mulch and everything."
That was 12 years ago, and the mulch sale still is going strong. The sale has raised $7,000 for Scecina's sports teams in each of the past two years. That's a lot of mulch and potting mix. And a lot of satisfied customers. This year order by April 17, 2017, for delivery on April 22. Go to scecina.org/mulch to order!
"It's not only a fundraiser," says Hurrle, "It's a community service, because we deliver it."
Yes, they really do deliver it to your door within about an 8-mile radius. Ott helps round up student athletes from Crusader teams to load the trucks for delivery. Ott himself drives one of the trucks, and you also can find baseball coach Dave Gandolph '68 or director of development Jim McGuinness '68 or athletics director Jason Kehrer '88 behind the wheel of one of the mulch delivery trucks.
We really can use some parents and other drivers who have trucks to help out. If you can help deliver mulch with your truck, please contact the athletics department at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Jim Lynch '60 buys mulch from Scecina each year.
"Since I have a big garden and am always in need of mulch, I’ve been a customer of Scecina’s mulch sale for a number of years," he said. "The product is good, the bags are big, they deliver to my door, and I don’t feel their excessively expensive. As I purchase something I need, I can support Scecina at the same time. It’s a good deal!"
Thank you to Jim and all who help support Scecina by buying mulch or potting mix.
