President Therber announces administrative changes

Dear Scecina Memorial High School Community,

At an all-staff meeting Thursday, June 27, I announced two internal administrative promotions. As a result, Scecina will have an interim principal for the 2019–2020 year, and our director of curriculum position will be restructured into an assistant principal position.

Dr. Joe Brettnacher, who was principal of Scecina for the past two years, recently resigned to assume the position of superintendent of Catholic schools for the Diocese of Fort Wayne-South Bend.

Regarding administrative decisions for 2019-2020, I consulted with several stakeholders, including the Office of Catholic Schools, all Scecina academic department chairs, a group of Scecina parents, a group of East Deanery pastors, and the Scecina Board of Directors executive committee.

I’m happy to announce that Mr. David Dellacca, the current Scecina vice president of technology and director of curriculum, has accepted the position of interim principal; and Mr. Jesse Purvis, current English teacher and department chair, has accepted the position of assistant principal.

Both Mr. Dellacca and Mr. Purvis are qualified for these roles and committed to serving our school through them. They will assume their new duties on July 1, 2019.

Mr. Dellacca, a parishioner at St. Michael Parish in Greenfield, has been on the Scecina staff since 2014. He holds a K-12 educator license with concentrations in school media services and career and technical education. He holds a master’s degree in information and communication sciences. David has taught online courses for seven years at Indiana University and has been a classroom teacher at Scecina and in Lawrence Township Schools. He’s been involved in many successful school-wide projects at Scecina, including professional development for faculty, the 1:1 student technology initiative, the Graduation Pathways Committee, School Improvement Plan Committee, and School Safety Committee.

David is scheduled to complete the Building Level Administrator licensure program through Marian University in summer 2020.

Mr. Purvis, a 2006 Scecina graduate and member of Little Flower Parish, has been on the Scecina staff since 2015. Before then, he was a teacher at St. Lawrence Catholic School. He has a bachelor’s degree from Wabash College and a master’s degree in education from Marian University. This spring he completed the Building Level Administrator license requirement through Marian University. Mr. Purvis is a well-regarded classroom teacher, Scecina’s boys varsity soccer head coach, and a valued member of our School Improvement Plan Committee and School Safety Committee.

Mr. Dellacca, Mr. Purvis, and I share a vision for the Catholicity of Scecina, a belief in all students’ potential for success, and high expectations for all our programs in service and support to our community.

Because the appointments of Mr. Dellacca and Mr. Purvis are both internal promotions, we have begun putting plans in place to fill the roles that they previously held.

In accordance with guidance from the Office of Catholic Schools, I anticipate a public search process this winter for the position of (non-interim) principal for the 20-21 school year and beyond.

Thank you for your continued prayers and service to the Scecina Community, and please join me in wishing Mr. Dellacca and Mr. Purvis well in their new positions!

Joe Therber
