Reflecting on courage, sacrifice and community
Entering November and approaching the Thanksgiving holiday, we have so much for which to be grateful. I think of Veterans Day next week on Saturday, November 11. How blessed we are as a Scecina community to know that so many of our alumni have answered the call to defend and protect human freedoms.
The event program for Father Tom Day last week contained a listing of deceased and living Scecina alumni military veterans. Reflecting on these courageous individuals’ lives and self-sacrifice is a wonderful experience. We honored Mr. Tom Griffin (right, with President Therber) of our Class of 1962 last week with the annual Father Tom Service Award, an award that we bestow upon a person for making Scecina Memorial High School an important part of his or her life and for frequently “giving that little extra.”
As with Saints and saints in the Catholic Church, you could say that we have Father Tom Service Award Recipients and recipients. Thank you for all that you do to ensure and advance Scecina as a vital ministry of our Church! The October/November window is a time of accomplishments and transitions. Our students recently completed the first grading period. 257 students, or more than half our student body, earned Honor Roll status for the first quarter of the year. We have bright and dedicated students!
As I interact with prospective students who visit Scecina at this time of year, it is a privilege to answer their questions and share with them the noble legacy of Father Thomas Scecina, the mission of our school, the accomplishments and impact of our alumni, the aspirations of our current students, and the generosity of our Scecina community.
Thank you for being aboard this journey!
