Sara's Scecina Story

Junior Sara Beers

By Beth Murphy

For our spring fundraising appeal, we went looking for a student who could exemplify what we believe Scecina offers its students. All signs pointed to Sara Beers. She had shown steady academic improvement and growth as a Scecina student and was accomplished as a member of the Scecina Crusaders softball team.

Sara, a junior, enthusiastically said yes when asked to be the “face” of our spring appeal, which was to tell the story of a Scecina student. Her mother also was committed: “Sending Sara to Scecina was one of the best decisions we ever made as parents,” she told us. Sara’s testimonial about how the environment and the staff at Scecina were helping her set and reach new goals tugged at our heartstrings.

Sara was a good sport in handling the interviews, the writing and the photo shoot that were necessary for the spring appeal materials. She spent a couple of hours under the lens of photographer David Leszcynski ’09.

The result is Sara’s Scecina Story, a real-life, genuine story of one young woman’s transformation and success at Scecina. We believe you will be touched by Sara’s Story, just as we were.

Here is Sara’s Story, in her own words:

When I finally realized that I wanted to go to college and play softball, I knew I needed to get serious about my school work. I had switched from a public school to Scecina, which helped, because Scecina was completely different. It gave me a fresh start. I was inspired to do more and to study harder, and my grades really improved.

I also enjoy the Christian environment at Scecina that is a daily reminder of God’s love for me! That wasn’t part of my previous school experience.

As my mom said, my parents believe that sending me to Scecina was one of the best decisions they have made, and I agree. Scecina is filled with great people, and I’ve had amazing teachers who have changed my life. As a result, I have decided to study elementary education in college. Scecina certainly has shown me the path that God wants me to take.

My main co-curricular activity at Scecina is softball, a great tradition at Scecina. (I play third base.) Last year we won the State Sectional championship for the 12th time in a row and also the Regional!

Your support for Scecina gives more students like me the chance to better themselves in their education, and they may not have that same chance at another school. I am proof of how much someone can improve and change thanks to Scecina’s smaller class sizes and the caring teachers who create a great learning environment.

Thank you,

Sara Beers ‘17
