For Scecina senior Isaiah Bryant, the language of athletics has helped to shape his spirituality and connect him with Christ. “My classmates may be surprised to know that I pray before every game, before every race,” he says. But through sports Isaiah has learned to see God in all things: his teammates, his coaches, and even his opponents. For Isaiah, sports is a lived experience of faith.

During his time at Scecina Isaiah has represented the Crusaders on the field, on the court, and on the track. As a four-year member of the football team, Isaiah played on the 2012 Semi-State Championship team and also an integral part of the Sectional Championship team in 2015. Throughout his football career at Scecina, Isaiah has been the Most Valuable Player, Defensive Player of the Year, and an All-Conference, All-City, and All-State player.

Isaiah also has achieved success within the track and field program. A four-year participant, Bryant runs the 60-meter dash and is a part of the 4×200-meter relay. He currently is ranked No. 2 in the state for indoor track and field, and No. 11 for outdoor events.

Away from the athletic arena Isaiah is focused on success in the classroom. He has maintained a 3.35 grade point average through seven semesters. Isaiah has been honored with the Scecina Scholar Athlete Award, given to students who maintain a minimum 3.0 GPA while participating in one or more athletic program.

Currently undecided on what he would like to study in college, Isaiah is taking full advantage of Scecina’s diverse curriculum to explore a variety of fields. He is enrolled in Advanced Placement Psychology, Honors English, Speech, and Advanced Television Production. Isaiah feels that the opportunity to examine so many different subjects will help him narrow his interests and help him to select a path for college and career.

Although the path may not yet be clear, Isaiah is prepared for the journey. He gathers strength from his faith, pray, and these words: “Clear Eyes, Full Heart, Can’t lose.” He is equipped with the knowledge he attained in the classroom; the core values of excellence, vocation, stewardship, and servant leadership that have shaped his spirituality; and the traits of dedication and tenacity he has learned through athletics. Isaiah admits that being a productive leader has been his biggest challenge. However, during his time as a Crusader Isaiah has learned that “the team is never just about you.” Through the opportunities he has been given at Scecina Memorial High School to learn, grow, and lead, Isaiah is prepared to go forth and transform the world inspired by the light of Christ.

Isaiah is the son of Cheryl Harney and Michael Bryant. He is a graduate of Andrew Academy on the near Northeastside of Indianapolis.
