Academic Performance-Based Scholarships

As part of its commitment to academic excellence, Scecina awards academic scholarships to the top academic students from each Catholic grade school in the East Deanery. Performance-based scholarship are also available to students from the Oaks Academy, KIPP Indy, and Paramount School of Excellence.

A student may receive no more than one of the following academic performance-based scholarships.  Students who are eligible to receive academic performance-based scholarships may also apply for and receive need-based tuition assistance and other grants that Scecina, local parishes and organizations offer.

Here is how it works. In December, Scecina asks each principal to send Scecina’s director of enrollment management the names of the 8th grade students and their grade point average (GPA) at the conclusion of the first semester of the current school year. GPA is the only criterion used to determine the awarding of academic performance-based scholarships. In early January, Scecina begins the process of awarding four-year academic scholarships to the students who meet the set criteria as outlined below and who choose to attend Scecina. In the event of a tie, a second (or more) scholarship will be awarded at the full value as outlined below.  Unless noted, the following scholarships are renewable provided that the student recipients remain in good academic and social standing.

Father Thomas Scecina Scholarship
The eighth-grade student who has the highest grade point average in his or her class, his or her GPA is 3.8 or higher, and plans to attend Scecina is awarded a $5,000 annual Father Thomas Scecina Scholarship. Over four-years, the value of this scholarship is $20,000.

A $2,500 annually renewable Discover Opportunities scholarship is available to two parishioners from each of the East Deanery parishes that do not have a school: SS. Peter and Paul Cathedral, St. Mary, St. Rita, and St. Thomas the Apostle.

Here is how it works. Scecina invites the pastor from these parishes to nominate in January the names of two 8th grade students who he believes would contribute to and benefit from the academic, spiritual, co-curricular, and extra-curricular opportunities at Scecina.  In late January, Scecina begins the process of awarding these four-year scholarships with a total value of $10,000 to the students who choose to attend Scecina.

Three Placement Test Scholarships ranging from $500 to $2000 will be awarded to up to three students who take the High School Placement Test (HSPT), submit their scores before the Early Bird Deadline, and score at the 90th percentile (national percentile) or higher. Scholarships are awarded for the freshman year only. In the event of a tie, a second (or more) scholarship will be awarded at the full value as outlined below.

The eighth grade student who has the highest score on the HSPT is awarded a $2,000 (1st Place) Placement Test Scholarship if he or she attends Scecina.
