  • International students enjoy short stay at Scecina

    Scecina Memorial High School again played international host when eight students from Germany and two from Luxembourg visited from March 22 through April 8. They were here for a short-stay program, which lasts 2 ½ weeks. 

    The 10 students enjoyed American mac and cheese and shopping, especially for Levi’s denim, which is much less costly in the United States. Many also said they found Americans, specifically Hoosiers, to be more approachable than what they’re used to in Europe. ...Read More

  • New Horizons Indy to play free concert at Scecina

    New Horizons Band of Indianapolis will perform a free concert of big band and Broadway favorites at Scecina Memorial High School at 3 p.m. Sunday, April 29.  

    New Horizons Band of Indianapolis was founded and is co-directed by Sam Rhinesmith, who was Scecina’s first band director (1955-61) and started the Scecina music program. Rhinesmith retired as band director at North Central High School. 

    At the free April 29 concert, the 50-member band also will “salute” Scecina by playing the fight song, which was written by Rhinesmith, as well as the school song and alma mater. ...Read More

  • Scecina wins $10,000 theatre grant from NBC

    Scecina Memorial High School is one of 50 schools throughout the country to win a $10,000 R.I.S.E. America Grant for its theatre program. NBC awarded $500,000 in grants to high school theatre programs in concert with the network’s new drama, “Rise,” which premieres on Tuesday, March 13. Scecina is the only school in Indiana to receive a grant. 

    The R.I.S. E. (Recognizing and Inspiring Student Expression) America Grants are designed to assist theatre programs with production expenses, technical equipment, master classes and other needs.
