English 12 Students Plan Their Futures
Inspired by insights from the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) conference this summer, English teacher Ms. Wetzel and English Language Development Coordinator Mrs. Fix introduced a unique “class reunion” project for their English 12 students this week.
After attending a session titled “The Neuroscience of Hope,” which highlighted research showing that hope drives productivity, resilience, and a meaningful life, Ms. Wetzel brought the idea back to the classroom. Students were asked to imagine their lives 15 years into the future, set two SMART goals to help achieve their dreams, and prepare a short “elevator speech” to share what they had “accomplished” — from careers and family life to faith, community involvement, and hobbies.
On “reunion day,” the classes celebrated with punch and brownies as students shared their speeches and connected through a fun BINGO game. The activity encouraged students to find classmates who had envisioned similar life milestones, such as moving five hours away, working in the medical field, or raising three children.
The project also tied beautifully to theology teacher Mr. Helle’s earlier assignment, in which students wrote a fictional biography about their future lives, and were guided by the message of Jeremiah 29:11:
“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD,
“plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”
This unit sets the stage for the next one, where students will begin research on practical “adulting” topics such as retirement planning, purchasing a home, and parenting approaches. Ms. Wetzel and Mrs. Fix were proud of how thoughtfully students envisioned their futures and are excited to continue guiding them as they prepare for life after graduation.
