Scecina’s Eric Montgomery Named Indiana Latino Youth Honor Nominee

Scecina Memorial High School senior Eric Montgomery has been named an Indiana Latino Youth Honor Nominee for the NFL’s Latino Youth Honors program. This recognition celebrates outstanding young leaders in athletics, academics, and community involvement across the state. All 32 NFL teams are invited to select one male and one female high school senior football player to represent their team and state. Eric was chosen as the male student to represent the Indianapolis Colts and the state of Indiana in this year’s program.

If Eric advances from nominee to finalist in the program, he would join a select group of student-athletes nationwide who are invited to participate in special NFL events during Super Bowl Week. Finalists also receive college grant awards. Two national winners earn $25,000 scholarships, while the remaining finalists receive $5,000 grants. National winners are recognized during the league’s annual NFL Honors broadcast and through the Hispanic Heritage Foundation’s national celebration.

As part of the recognition, Eric will attend the Indianapolis Colts vs. Las Vegas Raiders game at Lucas Oil Stadium on Sunday, Oct. 5. He will receive parking and VIP pregame sideline passes as part of the experience.

About Eric

At Scecina, Eric is one of three captains on the Crusaders varsity football team, where he leads with energy, discipline, and faith. He is also a member of the track and field team and participates in the National Honor Society. Beyond athletics and academics, Eric serves as a Student Ambassador, welcoming prospective families and representing Scecina at events.

Faith and community are central to Eric’s life. His family are parishioners at St. Philip Neri, and he previously attended Holy Cross before completing middle school at Little Flower. The Montgomerys remain connected to both parishes, often attending Mass at each. Eric is also known for his enthusiasm in supporting other Scecina teams and activities, cheering on classmates and helping to build school spirit.

“I love to show up for our sports and school events,” Eric said. “It’s important to me to support our community and help make it bigger and better.”

We caught up with Eric to hear his thoughts about this honor, his heritage, and what inspires him:

Q&A with Eric Montgomery

Q: How did you feel when you learned you were named the Indiana Latino Youth Honor nominee?
A: I was very grateful for the opportunity and proud knowing I was chosen. It shows how hard I have worked up to this point, not only in football but also in my community and in academics.

Q: How has your heritage shaped who you are today?
A: My heritage shaped me into who I am because I grew up learning both cultures and seeing the differences and similarities. My mom really inspired me to embrace both sides. She encourages me to be proud of who I am and to never let anyone tell me otherwise.

Q: What lessons have you learned from your coaches?
A: Coach Harris has had a big impact on me. His most important quote is, “Take God with you in every play.” That means a lot to me and reflects the way I play football.

Q: In what ways has Scecina prepared you for this honor?
A: In the classroom, I have learned to stay focused, keep up with my grades, and support the Scecina community. On the football field, I have learned discipline, hard work, and how to play to the best of my ability. I take God with me on every play, and that helps me perform my best.

Q: How do you show leadership at Scecina?
A: On the field, I try to uplift my teammates when we are down and show them that I will give my best to help the team win. In school, I focus on finishing my work, participating in class, and helping make Scecina a better place for everyone.

Q: What do you hope to take away from this Colts experience?
A: I hope it reminds me and others to never take opportunities for granted.

Q: What advice would you give to other young people?
A: Embrace your culture and never let anyone tell you differently. Do your best and be the change the world needs.
